The Secondary 4 and 5 English Language
Course is designed to help students consolidate what they have learned
through S1 to S3, as well as to broaden and deepen their learning experiences to help them develop the necessary language knowledge and skills for further study, vocational training or
work.
The course
prepares students for the 3 papers in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education
Examination – English Language.
Paper 1 A & B Reading and Writing
Paper 1A Reading
(1 hour):
Students will be required to respond to a
variety of written texts and make
use of the information provided to complete or produce a different text
Paper 1B Writing (1hour 30
minutes)
Students will be required to do 1) a short, guided
writing task of 100 to 150 words with the situation and the purpose for
writing given and 2) a longer and more open-end writing task of 200 to 250
words.
Students are tested their ability to comprehend
written texts and extract specific information from them for the production
of a different text.
Paper 2 Listening and
Integrated Skills (2 hours)
Students will be required
to do a variety of listening, reading and writing tasks based on the same
theme, of which at least one will require them to produce an extended piece
of writing of 100 to 200 words.
Students
are tested their ability to process information from both spoken and written
sources
Paper 3 Speaking
Students
are tested their ability to establish and maintain interaction in the
examination.
Part 3A Group discussion
(preparation: 5 minutes; discussion: 6 minutes per group)
Students will be required to conduct discussions
based on given prompts (in groups of 4).
Students are
tested their ability to communicate effectively in giving suggestions,
arguing for and/or against a position, or discussing the pros and cons of a
proposal etc.
(Students can make notes during the preparation and
refer to their notes during the discussion.)
Part 3B Individual response
(one minute per candidate)
Students will be required to respond individually to
questions based on the group discussion task.
Students are tested on their ability to express
ideas clearly and accurately with appropriate use of vocabulary and language
patterns, correct pronunciation and good organization.

Project Yi Jin
|

English I
The Project Yi Jin English I Course (60 hours), consisting of
five units, is designed to systematically develop students’ abilities in
general English proficiency. It
aims at preparing students to use English in communicative situations in
daily life contexts. Students
will learn English in meaningful contexts relevant to their daily lives. Themes and topics are chosen to suit
the experience and interest of students.
This module combines communicative activities with skill-building
exercises to boost students’ mastery of key language skills that they need in
an international city such as Hong Kong.
Unit 1 Get
to Know Yourself Better!
This unit would guide students step by step to get to
know their own feelings, emotions and personality.
Unit 2 Traveling
In this unit, students would gain more knowledge about
international customs and usual practice and also about the difference
between British and American English.
Writing blogs would also be introduced in the unit.
Unit 3 The
Colours of Hong Kong
In this unit, students would explore how places are
described in brochures and also learn how to plan a tour and write
itineraries.
Unit 4 Entertainment
This unit would talk about going to the cinema and
watching films and students would learn how to describe films and write
persuasive reviews of films, CDs and DVDs from it.
Unit 5 Integrated
Listening, Speaking and Writing Practice
This unit emphasizes the use of general expressions and
situational expressions in listening and making conversations. Students would be exposed to the use
of social English in various contexts.
Also, integrated listening, reading and writing practice is provided in the unit.
English II
The Project Yi Jin English II Course (60 hours), consisting of
6 units, is designed to systematically develop students’ abilities in a range
of business and social situations in the commercial world. It aims at preparing students to use
Business English in communicative situations in work contexts. Students will build up confidence to
use English in areas such as job hunting, telephoning, ordering, business letter writing, making reservations, starting
social conversation and dealing with problems in business. Topics are chosen to suit the
requirements of work that students will face in their near future. This
module combines communicative activities with skill-building exercises to
boost students’ mastery of key language skills that they need in an international
city such as Hong Kong.
Unit 1 Knowing More about
Jobs
This unit would give students ideas how to analyze the
nature of a job and what satisfaction they can get from it.
Unit 2 Job Hunting Skills
From this unit, students would learn how to write email
and formal application letters and curriculum vitae and also how to prepare
for a job interview.
Unit 3 Telephone
Skills at Work
Students would acquire skills how to start a social conversation
and handle incoming calls from this unit.
Unit 4 Business
Correspondence
In this unit, (1) students would be exposed to the
basic format of a business letter and the use of written English in the business
context; (2) writing letters of order, inquiry, confirmation and adjustment
in the formats of e-mail, letter and fax would also be covered to let
students have a general idea about external business communication in
English; (3) furthermore, placing orders over the phone, writing memos and
relative useful expressions would be introduced.
Unit 5 Business Meetings
/ Minutes
In this unit, students would learn how to construct an agenda and
write minutes. The language of
minutes would be introduced.
Unit 6 Traveling
Overseas to Attend Business
In this unit, students would be exposed to
conversations in various authentic contexts of traveling overseas and would
also be equipped with skills in giving a short presentation.

Pre-Associate Degree (in Collaboration with
Poly U Speed)
Core Courses
English 1
English II
Introduction
Caritas Institute for Further & Adult Education collaborates with
Poly U Speed to offer the Pre-Associate Degree programme. In the Pre-Associate Degree programme,
English I and English II are core courses designed to help students develop
their Language skills
for communicative purposes. They aim at
enhancing students’ understanding of the structural and functional properties
of lexis and grammar of the English language. They give students opportunities
to master the four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), develop their
individual presentations skills on topics of everyday life and develop a
portfolio for self reflective purposes in the learning process. Upon completion of the courses, students are normally expected
to be able to communicate in a variety of
daily-life contexts competently and effectively.

Teaching/Learning Approach
The courses English 1and English II adopt a learner-centred approach.
Students would be engaged in a variety of tasks based on units of different
daily topics covering the four skills, which are embedded in contextual texts. They would have many chances to work collaboratively
with their peers in problem-solving activities. Each topic contains: 1) a variety of
reading comprehension exercises to improve students’ critical reading skills;
2) a variety of grammar and vocabulary exercises to help them practise writing
sentences and using grammar and vocabulary items in written texts; 3) a variety
of listening exercises to improve their listening comprehension and critical listening
skills; and 4) a variety of writing exercises to help them think and write
critically, such as writing ‘For and Against’ compositions on topics they have
learnt.
